Guillermo del Toro Presents Mama

Mama follows a couple, Lucas and Annabel, who must raise Lucas’ nieces, Victoria and Lilly, after the two girls are discovered living savagely for five years in the woods.  As Annabel reluctantly tries to get used to the addition of two young girls in her life, strange incidents begin to occur.  The two young girls claim that the vengeful spirit of their mother wants to hold on to them forever – but is it just the psychosis of two traumatized children or is something evil truly after them?

Anytime I see a Guillermo del Toro presented horror film I tend to get pretty excited for that movie.  del Toro has an amazing eye for horror and has presented/produced quite a few films over the years that have been worth a look.  I haven’t been in love with every single one but I really dug films like Julia’s Eyes and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.  With Mama, del Toro is presenting a film from newcomer Andres Muschietti, who directed the short film of the same name upon which this movie has been expanded from.  Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life, Lawless) stars in the film, sporting short black hair that almost made me not recognize her at first.  After seeing Chastain in The Tree of Life, I became an instant fan as she’s both really beautiful and gave an absolutely wonderful performance in that film.  So needless to say, Chastain starring in a del Toro produced horror film has me pretty pumped.

Mama opens on January 18, 2013.
