31 Days of ’80s Horror – The Evil Dead

31 Days of Horror Day 31 banner

Welcome to 31 Days of ’80s Horror boys and ghouls! Each day in October I’ll be posting about a horror film from the 1980s, some of which you may have heard of, others may be a little more obscure. This is the month to celebrate all things spooky so I wanted to present some films from my favorite era of the horror genre. I hope you enjoy the column and discover some new ’80s horror flicks to watch, or rewatch, whatever the case may be. I know I’ll be checking out some of these ghastly tales myself since I’ve come across a few that even I’ve never heard of! So on with the horror! On with the terror! On with the ’80s!

The Evil Dead

A group of friends go to a cabin in the woods, where an unspeakable evil lurking in the forest awaits them. They find the Necronomicon, the Book Of The Dead, and the taped translation of the text. Once the tape is played, the evil is released. One by one, the teens become possessed. With only one remaining, it is up to Ash to survive the night and battle The Evil Dead.

Sam Raimi is one of my favorite directors of all time and The Evil Dead is where it all started for the filmmaker. The movie features an awesome cast that includes the one and only Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker, Sarah York, Hal Delrich and Ted Raimi, who appears in various Fake Shemp roles. I absolutely love Raimi’s kinetic visual style and his oddball humor, which is on full display in later sequels. The Evil Dead was made independently with an incredibly low budget and under some pretty terrible conditions, but it was Sam Raimi’s skillful vision and the hard work of the cast and crew that pulled together to create one of horror’s most classic films. It may be brutal and pretty gross at times but it pulls no punches in its approach and does the genre justice by creating something that is memorable and deemed, by me, as being a must-see movie. If you’re looking for a movie to watch today on Halloween, The Evil Dead is a great way to have some horror fun on the spookiest of holidays.
