31 Days of ’80s Horror – The Curse

31 Days of Horror Day 23 banner

Welcome to 31 Days of ’80s Horror boys and ghouls! Each day in October I’ll be posting about a horror film from the 1980s, some of which you may have heard of, others may be a little more obscure. This is the month to celebrate all things spooky so I wanted to present some films from my favorite era of the horror genre. I hope you enjoy the column and discover some new ’80s horror flicks to watch, or rewatch, whatever the case may be. I know I’ll be checking out some of these ghastly tales myself since I’ve come across a few that even I’ve never heard of! So on with the horror! On with the terror! On with the ’80s!

The Curse movie poster

The Curse

After a mysterious, glowing orb plummets to Earth on the isolated Hayes’ farm, only young Zach realizes that the sphere is contaminating the local water supply with a grotesque, mutant space parasite! With the help of a visiting state official, Zach fights to alert his family and keep them from being transformed into murderous, slime-oozing fiends!

Wil Wheaton (The Guild, Star Trek: The Next Generation) and John Schneider (Dukes of Hazard, Smallville) star in this sci-fi horror thriller from director David Keith (Firestarter). I’ve never seen the movie but as soon as I saw the poster and that the story was based off of H.P. Lovecraft’s Color Out of Space, I knew I had to include it in my 31 Days of ’80s Horror column. For one, I’d never heard of The Curse before and the poster alone would have had me pick it up if I had seen it back in the days of my Blockbuster aisleway browsing. Secondly, I’m sure you’re looking at the poster and reading the synopsis and thinking, “I want to see this movie too!” That is of course, if you haven’t already seen it. If so, kudos to you (feel free to leave a comment below with your thoughts on the movie). The Curse just sounds fun.. mutant space parasites and murderous ooze and Wil Wheaton and H.P. Lovecraft and the ’80s.. it’s a recipe for fun times.
