Welcome to 31 Days of ’80s Horror boys and ghouls! Each day in October I’ll be posting about a horror film from the 1980s, some of which you may have heard of, others may be a little more obscure. This is the month to celebrate all things spooky so I wanted to present some films from my favorite era of the horror genre. I hope you enjoy the column and discover some new ’80s horror flicks to watch, or rewatch, whatever the case may be. I know I’ll be checking out some of these ghastly tales myself since I’ve come across a few that even I’ve never heard of! So on with the horror! On with the terror! On with the ’80s!
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
A spaceship, shaped like a circus tent, lands in a field near a small town, signaling the attack of deviant, red-nosed, balloon-twisting psychos from another world who plan to annihilate mankind – by turning people into cotton candy! Luckily, the town’s teen citizenry decide to fight back and teach the cosmic bozos a lesson. But these clowns are not klutzes, turning popcorn, peanuts and caramel corn into playful but deadly weapons of madcap destruction and mayhem!
This cheesefest is a lot of fun for all the over-the-top clown/circus-themed humor piled on top of the B-movie level acting and dialogue. There isn’t much in the way of scares, unless of course you are deathly afraid of clowns, but this sci-fi horror flick is all about the gags.. cotton candy people cocoons, popcorn guns and a spaceship shaped as a big top circus tent. The movie comes from the Chiodo Brothers who haven’t really done much since this movie, except it looks like they are coming back for another round of clowning around with the announced The Return of the Killer Klowns in Outer Space in 3D! The filmmakers said that they were looking to release it in 2012 but obviously that has not happened yet. I’m not sure if the sequel is still in the works or just delayed but I think another Killer Klowns movie would be most welcome!
