Lionsgate has announced the official cast line-up and plot for The Expendables 3! Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger will return for the third film in the trilogy and will be joined by fellow action vets Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, and Harrison Ford. New recruits include Kellan Lutz, MMA star Ronda Rousey, welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz and Glen Powell.
Sadly, it looks like the rumored participation of Nicholas Cage, Jackie Chan and Milla Jovovich won’t be happening. I was incredibly excited by Cage’s rumored involvement in the movie as I was hoping for some crazy Nic Cage action to be injected into Expendables 3. It’s always possible that Cage, Chan and Jovovich could still join as things happen last minute sometimes but I have a feeling we won’t be seeing them. Luckily though, we have Wesley Snipes in the mix, who could take over the crazy role by perhaps channeling his Simon Phoenix character from Demolition Man. I’m just happy Schwarzenegger is back as I love seeing Sly and Arnold sharing the big screen together and hopefully Arnold’s role is bigger than in the previous two films.
In The Expendables 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.
I’m down with the premise and kind of excited to see Gibson face off against the Expendables. He’s looking quite buff for his role as the villain (pictured in the set photos below) and could easily be the best villain of the Expendables franchise. He’s most certainly got the acting chops so hopefully the filmmakers provide lots of rage-induced fist punching between Stallone and Gibson.
Filming has recently begun in Bulgaria with Patrick Hughes (Red Hill) directing from a script by Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt (Olympus Has Fallen) and Stallone. The Expendables 3 is set for an August 15, 2014 release date.
