The Blu-ray Crypt – Apr. 30

Silver Linings Playbook

I thoroughly enjoyed David O. Russell’s latest movie.  It’s funny and dramatic and has some pretty great performances in it, particularly from Jennifer Lawrence who is rather exceptional in the film (she won Best Actresss for her role here).  The movie does have a few flaws but those don’t take away from the enjoyment of the movie.  The Blu-ray features a great video transfer and some decent special features, including 26 minutes of deleted scenes, a featurette with interviews of several members of the principal cast and crew, and a compilation Q&A with much of the cast.  This highly engaging film is an easy recommendation.

The Vampire Lovers blu art

The Vampire Lovers

A female vampire with lesbian tendencies ravages the young girls and townsfolk in eighteenth century Europe who, years earlier, killed off her fellow vampires.  A rousing hunt for the vampiress ensues as a group of men follow her bloody trail of terror through the countryside. This cult classic from Hammer Films has gained an audience for its campy nature and abundant nudity.  Scream Factory is releasing the film on Blu-ray for the first time and has provided a commentary with director Roy Ward Baker, star Ingrid Pitt and screenwriter Tudor Gates as well as some additional bonus materials that include interviews and insight into the film.

Star Trek TNG Season 3 blu art

Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season 3

Remastered for high-definition, this third season of The Next Generation arrives on Blu-ray with some very positive reviews.  The video quality is amongst the best, if not the best, of the remastered seasons released thus far and the set contains plenty of bonus features new and old that are worth the price of the set alone.  Star Trek fans would be wise to pick this new season up.

Manborg poster

Manborg (DVD only)

A young soldier killed during the first war against hell, Manborg reawakens in the future, rebuilt as a walking weapon and mankind’s last hope.  Struggling to learn the secret of his origins, Manborg unwittingly befriends a post-apocalyptic Australian punker, a knife-wielding vixen and a kung fu master before finally squaring off against Count Draculon in a desperate and bloody bid to take back the Earth.  This release from Dark Sky Films is only available on DVD but I thought it was worth mentioning here since the movie looks like loads of fun.  I’ve ordered myself a copy of the movie and will be watching it as soon as I get it.

Broken City blu art

Broken City

An ex-cop finds himself in over his head when he agrees to help out the corrupted mayor of New York City in this tense political thriller from director Allen Hughes.  I didn’t see this in the theater but the reviews of the film were less than stellar.  I like the two leads so I probably will give it a look eventually.  The Blu-ray disc features deleted scenes, an in-depth documentary and an alternative ending.

The Guilt Trip blu art

The Guilt Trip

I haven’t seen this one yet, mostly because I tend to avoid Barbra Streisand.  Seth Rogen is likable but not enough of a draw for me to make this a must-watch.  The disc lists a decent amount of special features (though I don’t know the quality of them) including the featurettes Barbra & Seth, Barbra’s World, Guilt Trip: A Real Mother of a Road Trip, In the Driver’s Seat, and Not Really a Road Trip Movie as well as alternate openings/endings, a blooper reel and deleted scenes.

Star Trek TMP blu art

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Previously available in a box set, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is now available by itself for those not wanting to spring the money for the set.  I’d imagine this is the same disc that’s in the box set, complete with all the special features but I have not been able to confirm this yet.  A few other Star Trek movie titles are also being released today and can be found below in the “More titles released today” section.
