The trailer for Elysium, writer/director Neill Blomkamp’s sophomore film, is now online and boy does it look pretty friggin’ sweet! The shares a similar gritty sci-fi look with District 9, Blomkamp’s first film. The story is set in the year 2159, where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. Max (Matt Damon) takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.
Before Blomkamp made the really incredible District 9, he was championed by Peter Jackson to direct the live-action adaptation of the video game Halo. I only bring this up because there are a couple shots in the trailer that remind me of this, especially with the space station evoking some trademark Halo visuals. It just continues to make me think that we lost out on a really amazing Halo movie, but I digress. Elysium looks very solid and appears to explore social class systems in addition to providing an entertaining time. Blomkamp is an intelligent filmmaker, giving us smart sci-fi and doing it on a budget that shames some of the bigger budget films of Hollywood, especially considering how good his films look. I’m really excited to see this come August 9. Looks like it might be time to revisit District 9.
