The new domestic and international trailers for The Wolverine have just arrived online after days of (unnecessary) teases. Embedded above is the international version, which in my opinion is much better than the domestic trailer (which you can watch here). The international version seems to let the setup breath a little more and the footage and pace flow more fluidly. I can’t say that either trailer really got my blood pumping and I was kind of expecting to see a little bit of the berserker rage that we have been promised by director James Mangold. Maybe that’s a good thing though so as to not spoil the bits of the movie that we want to see in the theater. Far too often do we see trailers that show all the better aspects of the movie and leave the actual theatrical viewing to be unsurprising.
Most everything in the trailer looks fine, though the train sequence looks like it could end up being kind of hokey. I still wish that we could have gotten the Darren Aronofsky directed movie that we all thought we were getting before he had to leave the project. I don’t dislike Mangold, in fact I like his movies, but Aronofsky is a much better filmmaker.
I remember seeing the trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2008 at Comic Con and getting all pumped up for the movie and then it turned out to be one of the biggest turds. I’m hoping that maybe my reactions to this new movie will be the opposite of the last Wolverine movie where I’m slightly underwhelmed by the trailer but will find myself walking out of the movie immensely satisfied. Guess I’ll find out come July 26.
