Swamp Thing Comes To Blu-ray This Summer

Scream Factory took to their Facebook page yesterday to announce that Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing will be hitting Blu-ray come this summer.  Here’s what they had to say:

Surprise!  Wes Craven’s 1982 Cult Comic Book Classic SWAMP THING (starring horror fan favorite Adrienne Barbeau) will be arriving this summer on Blu-ray for the first time!

As always, we are planning to provide as many bells and whistles as we can on this release, but we felt it was important to tell you early on that we will only be able to present the 91 minute U.S. cut of the film (the same version MGM has released on DVD since ’05) and not the 93 minute “unrated” international version as we had originally hoped for. This is due to legal issues that are out of our control and we hope you understand.

Stay tuned for more specific details – including exact street date – that will be revealed in the next 2-3 months!

I’m incredibly excited to see Swamp Thing get released on Blu-ray and even more excited it’s coming from Scream Factory.  It’s unfortunate that they weren’t able to get the unrated international cut but I’m not going to fret over it.  I’m happy they tried for it but, as they said, it was out of their control.  I’ll happily take the U.S. version with a great high-def transfer and good special features.

With the announcement of Swamp Thing, I can’t help but hope that they snag the license to put out a special edition of its sequel, The Return of Swamp Thing.  That movie is one of my favorite so-bad-it’s-good titles out there and I would absolutely love to see a release of it on Blu-ray, preferably in a special edition.  My fingers are crossed.

The Scream Factory label jumped onto the high-def home video scene in a big way with releases that include Halloween IIHalloween III: Season of the WitchTerror TrainThe Funhouse and They Live just to name a few.  On top of releasing those awesome titles, they have done an incredible job providing quality video transfers, great special features and cool reversible artwork for their releases that include original key art, which is so greatly appreciated. They definitely have the fan in mind and I’m certainly grateful of their hard work and effort.

In case you missed out on previous announcements of future Scream Factory Blu-ray releases, here are a few titles that are on their way for this year.  The selections are so good it might make some genre fans cry out of joy.  Scream Factory’s upcoming 2013 titles: From Beyond, Phantasm II, The Burning, The Fog, The Howling, The Town that Dreaded Sundown, The Incredible Melting Man, The Vampire Lovers, Lifeforce, Night of the Comet, Day of the Dead, Hospital Massacre, The Horror Show, The Vagrant, Scanners II & III, The Godsend and Schizoid.  That’s damn impressive and that’s just the stuff they’ve announced.
