Marvel Studios may have a lot on their plate in terms of upcoming films but Marvel’s Kevin Feige is already planning Phase Three of the Marvel cinematic universe. With Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World coming out this year, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 and The Avengers 2 in 2015, Marvel is looking to expand its character roster even further and it looks like Edgar Wright’s take on Ant-Man is a certainty.
“Ant-Man is definitely part of Phase Three,” Feige told MTV News. “Like Iron Man 3, it’s certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it’s also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we’re making the movie.” He went on to add, “I’ve known Edgar since our first lunch together at Comic-Con in 2004. He asked me what Marvel was doing with Ant-Man — we weren’t even a studio then; what a difference eight years makes! It’s very much an Ant-Man origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we’ve seen before.”
Another character that looks to be headed to the big screen is the long rumored Doctor Strange. Strange would add a mystical element to the universe and help broaden the Marvel brand.
“Doctor Strange, which I’ve been talking about for years, is definitely one of them,” said Feige. “He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he’s totally different from anything else we have, just like Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is Ant-Man, which keeps us excited.”
I’m most excited by the prospect of an Edgar Wright helmed Ant-Man, which will hit theaters in November of 2015. I can’t profess to being a Doctor Strange fan, though that is more to do with the fact that I just haven’t read much of the character’s stories. However, I’m all for a Doctor Strange movie and really hope they choose someone inspired to direct the film. I know I’ve seen Guillermo del Toro’s name tossed around as an ideal director by wishful fans and I would be really excited to see that as well but I feel like del Toro has his plate full right now and will most likely be unavailable. Plus I really want to see him take another crack at getting At the Mountains of Madness made. I wouldn’t mind seeing someone like Neil Marshall take the reigns of Doctor Strange and see what he would do with the film.
I don’t know if Ant-Man and Doctor Strange will be the only new characters added to Marvel Phase Three but they are most welcome additions. What Marvel character do you want to see get their own movie? What director would you like to see take on Doctor Strange?
