Christopher McQuarrie looks to be the choice director for Mission: Impossible 5.  After directing Tom Cruise in the upcoming Jack Reacher, Cruise and producer J.J. Abrams both reportedly want him for the job but will hire a writer for the film before making an official announcement. (Deadline)

Ubisoft’s film adaptation of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell has signed Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) to star as the highly trained Echelon operative, Sam Fisher.  Eric Warren Singer (The International) will write the film and early talks to find a studio home have transpired with both Warner Bros. and Paramount. Director Wes Craven took to Twitter recently to give an update on those curious if Scream 5 was happening.  He wrote, “No news on Scream 5 yet. You guys really want another one?” (Wes Craven)

James Wan (Insidious, Saw) is in talks to direct a big screen version of the popular 80s TV show, MacGyver.  It’s unknown if Richard Dean Anderson will be involved. (Variety)

Harry Potter director David Yates, who is attached to direct Tarzan for Warner Bros., has named Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) as his top choice to play the titular character.  Samuel L. Jackson is being eyed to play George Washington Williams, an ex-mercernary that Tarzan teams up with to save the Congo from a warlord. (Variety)

Book of Mormon star Josh Gad and Ryan Dixon have been hired by Universal Pictures to write a treatment for Triplets, the sequel to Twins, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito.  Gad will write the screenplay that has Schwarzenegger and DeVito reprising their roles and Eddie Murphy as the the third brother. Star Trek: Enterprise looks to be headed to the Blu-ray format next year.  There is currently a contest on Facebook where three different cover art designs can be voted on by “Like”-ing the one you want.  The one with the most votes will be the featured Blu-ray art for the set. (Dark Horizons)

Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Good Universe have acquired the rights to Susan Ee’s bestselling fantasy book series Angelfall.  The story is set six weeks after angels of the apocalypse descend to demolish the modern world, street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night.  (Comingsoon.net)

It’s been confirmed that Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) will provide the complete screenplay for Star Wars: Episode VII.  Producer Frank Marshall stated that no director has been hired yet but that they are closing in on a few candidates.  (SuperHeroHype)

Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Nick Offerman and Alison Brie are all joining the voice cast of the upcoming 3D animated Lego movie.  They join the already cast Will Arnett, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Morgan Freeman.  Lego will be released on February 7, 2014. (Deadline)

A new full-length trailer for Sam Raimi’s Oz, The Great and Powerful is now online. The prequel to the classic The Wizard of Oz lands in theaters on March 8, 2013. (YouTube)
