Disney XD’s new animated series Tron: Uprising is about to launch on June 7th and to promote it, Tron fans are being treated to a 30-minute uninterrupted prelude to the series, entitled “Beck’s Beginning,” which you can watch below! Much like the franchise, the animated series is visually striking and employs CG animation, with a 2D aesthetic, to delve into the world of The Grid. The series follows the journey of a new character, a young program named Beck, who decides to rebel against Clu’s oppression and carry on the Tron name and legend after one of his friends is ruthlessly derezzed. The new series is set between the 1982 feature film, Tron, and its sequel, Tron: Legacy. Tron: Uprising premieres on Thursday, June 7 (9:00 p.m.) on Disney XD.
Tron: Uprising – Beck’s Beginning features a story from Tron: Legacy screenwriters Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz and music by Daft Punk collaborator Joseph Trapanese. The show also features a pretty great voice cast that include Elijah Wood (as Beck), Bruce Boxleitner (as Tron), Mandy Moore (as Mara), Emmanuelle Chriqui (as Paige), Nate Corddry (as Zed), Lance Henriksen (as General Tesler), Reginald VelJohnson (as Able), Paul Reubens (as Pavel) and Tricia Helfer (as The Grid).
I really enjoy the world of Tron; the cool aesthetic, the lightcycles, the games, etc., so it’s great to see the world being expanded in the new animated series. I have to admit that, at first, the anime-influenced character designs weren’t something I was too hot on but it works with the show’s look. The pacing feels a little rushed and the script can seem a tad cliche at times but overall I enjoyed watching the prelude and am curious to see how the rest of the series plays out. I like the fact that the Daft Punk score from Tron: Legacy has been carried over to the series as it was one of my favorite aspects of the film and definitely helps create some connective tissue between Legacy and Uprising. It also feels like they haven’t dumbed down the world of Tron for easier kid consumption thankfully. It seems that the series’ intention is to entertain the fans of Tron and not just a specific demographic. I will add the series to my DVR, which thankfully means I can fast forward through all the kid-centric advertising that would accompany a network like Disney XD, and hope that Tron: Uprising continues to deliver something of quality to all the Tron fans out there.
So check out the prelude, Tron: Uprising – Beck’s Beginning, below and tune into Disney XD on June 7th at 9:00 PM EST if you want to see the rest of the series. Feel free to post your thoughts in the comments section as well!
